Vaginal Pessaries
Vaginal pessaries were introduced many years ago to treat incompetence of the pelvic floor (genital prolapse, urinary incontinence). Recently, pessaries are be applied to treat cervical incompetence and so prevent premature delivery.
Pessaries were produced with different materials such as glass, porcelain, clay or rubber. Today we use tissue tolerant non-allergic silicone.
After the menopause, the local application of estrogenes is highly recommended to increase the effect by preventing local necroses.
Pessary placement provides an important therapeuthic option for the management of pelvic organ disease because surgery with anaesthesia is avoided and cost is minimal. | |||
